Philadelphia Eagle Quarterback Situation
Author: Eric WilsonA good performance by Michael Vick in yesterdays win against Detroit, has presented Coach Andy Reid with a quarterback controversy whether he wants it or not. Reid has already came out and said that Kevin Kolb will be the starting quaterback next week. I guess there is an unwritten NFL rule that an injured player should never lose his job by injury, which mostly goes unnoticed if the injured player plays a non glamour position like offensive or defensive lines. But with quarterback being the most important and most scrutinized position on the team, that rule should not apply. New England coach Bill Belichick went against that unwritten rule and that won him 3 Super Bowls, a AFC championship, countless playoff appearances and genius status. Imagine what would have happened if he had given Drew Bledsoe back his job when he got injured in 2001 instead of letting Tom Brady play. Belichek might be coaching in high school, Brady might be winning Super Bowls for the New York Jets(don't Jet fans wish) and Bledsoe might still be the starting quarterback for the Patriots. Heaven forbid.
I understand we all have egos, especially NFL coaches. Reid has been extremely successful during his tenure with the Eagles.(whether Eagles fans agree or not). He drafted Kevin Kolb, groomed him to be quarterback of the future, and traded the franchise quarterback, to a division rival no less, to make room for Kolb to play. I admit Kolb played well limited play last year. But from what I seen in preseason games and the first half of the Green Bay game. His play has been less than average. He doesn't have "it." Having "it" is more than executing X's and O's in practice. It's making plays during the games.
On the other hand, Vick has never looked better. His arm strength is second to no none, he doesn't have all his speed back, (which only helps him, since he can't depend on his legs) but he can still run away from most, and he has the athletic ability to improvise broken plays that no defensive scheme can account for. Under Reid's tutoring he looks more like a polished quarterback. He looks like he's going through the normal quarterback progressions, instead if just taking off. His running ability also helps with the running game, since players have to stay at home on bootlegs. He is a nightmare for defensive coordinators to defend. To make matters worse, Vic is saying all the right things, "I'm just here to be the back- up", which gets him public sentiment. Vick body language is saying, "I can play game."
Kolb was under pressure before, he got hurt, now he's under even more. Eagle fans have the well earned reputation of booing for no reason. Remember they booed McNabb when he was drafted. As soon as her Kolb throws a incomplete pass or even worse, throws a interception, they will be howling for Vic.(No pun intended)As Boobie Clark once said from Friday Night Lights, the movie. "If you want to win, let Boobie spin". That's what Andy Reid should do. Let Michael Vic spin.
